Ntombifuti

NTOMBIFUTI is a 40 foot aluminium sloop. Designed by Ed Dubois and built in Germany by Dubbel and Jesse in 1983, she has already quite a pedigree in the British short-handed offshore race circuit. Below a list of what I believe are the major races she participated in.

  • AZAB 1983, Ian Radford

  • OSTAR 1984, Ian Radford, 22d 16h

  • RB&I 1985, Ian Radford, Rod White

  • TWOSTAR 1986, Kitty Hampton, Mary Falk, 23d 4h

  • RB&I 1989, previous owner

  • Azores pursuit race 1992, Raymond Page

  • RB&I 1993, previous owner

  • AZAB 1995, John Emerson

  • RB&I 1998, John Emerson, Tim Alexander

  • OSTAR 2000, Asia Pajkowska, 29d 5h

  • AZAB 2011, Ralph Villiger

  • OSTAR 2013, Ralph Villiger, 36d 8h, 27d 11h from Brest after repairs

Her name means "the second born daughter" in Zulu, as she was the second boat of the original owner. On the south coast of England she was known as the "red bitch" since her hull was painted red, she was often sailed by women, and outpaced her competitors. In 2003/4 she got sandblasted revealing her aluminium hull. Her current look reminds more of a battle ship than a race yacht.

She has water ballast tanks, a fin keel, and rod rigging.
In 2012 she got completely refurbished.
